Your Personal Values Statement

Woodland Strategies specializes in helping organizations develop Values, Mission and Vision Statements. Generally, creating internal and external messaging such as this can take many months, and is often done as a team. It’s worth the time commitment. Statements such as these provide excellent operational guidelines for all stakeholders, both internal and external. This experience also provides an outstanding opportunity to establish stronger teams within any for-profit or non-profit entity.

We have all endured many challenges and many changes this past year. We will see more change in the New Year, that is for sure. This is a good time to consider how your personal short term and long-term goals fit with your own current situation. You can examine this is some depth by developing a Personal Values statement.

Like organizations, individuals are wise to create their own Personal Values, Vision and Mission Statements. You are an individual reading this blog. You are part of many teams, formal and informal. What do you bring to the table in so many different scenarios? What do you stand for? What is your bottom line?

A Personal Values Statement can benefit all kinds of individuals in various situations. Many people have lost their employment this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Perhaps you aren’t working right now. This exercise may help you prepare as you begin to navigate new employment options or new opportunities in the New Year. Maybe you are looking for more direction or inspiration as we look forward to the year ahead. If your situation hasn’t dramatically changed, this is still a wonderful way to consider your own personal growth, and this may help you visit new goals for 2021.

Creating any Values Statement is a challenging task. How can you begin to narrow down so many important concepts? Values are the foundation. These represent core beliefs, which ultimately guide behavior. What do you do with competing values? Of the three Statements, the Values Statement really represents the most intense reflection. It’s the beginning – your building blocks. This entails the most work of the three. Don’t rush the process. Think about it. Then think about it a little more.

Possibilities lie ahead. Be confident! Remember, if you can really articulate your values, then difficult decisions will be a little easier to navigate. Who couldn’t benefit from that right now?
